Honey is an amazing and vastly underestimated product everybody should have not only in their kitchen cabinets but also in their first aid kit. There are endless benefits to consuming honey internally as well as topical.
Let’s begin with some of the medicinal uses of honey, of which most people don’t even think when buying honey. With its various compounds such as flavonoids and organic acids honey is an efficient antioxidant. Its low pH and high sugar content honey is naturally antibacterial and has traditionally been used to treat wounds or minor infections. Taking a teaspoon of honey every morning over the fall and winter days significantly decreases the chances of getting sick with the flu or a cold. Even if it’s already too late and one has caught a cold, some honey can help soothe a sore throat and relieve some coughing. Honey furthermore has prebiotic properties which help you digest and support a healthy gut.
Furthermore honey is extremely nutritious, containing loads of calcium, potassium, Vitamine B and C. It also contains carbohydrates which provide an energy boost. Just recently it has become a trend all over the internet for people to eat a little honey with pink himalayan salt as a replacement for pre-workout. And we don’t have to talk about the endless possibilities to consume honey, in tea, as a sugar replacement, on bread, on some cheese etc.
On top of that, mixing honey and some yogurt will create an amazing hair and skin mask that washes off easily and provides protection and moisture. Instead of using chapstick that helps only temporarily and then actually dries the lips out even more, making your lips depended on it, use just a drop of honey on your lips and you will notice how within a day your lips will heal an unbelievable amount.
Last but not least due to the low water content and acidic pH honey has the longest shelf life of all foods. There has been honey found in pyramids that was thousands of years old, and in theory it was still edible. In other words, get a jar of honey, you can not go wrong with it. (Also, buy local and natural! 🙂 )
