Meditation Made Free: Tips for the Curious

Hi! Hello! Good morning! How is everyone doing today? Let me guess, you were about to say good, right? That’s because we have auto corrected our brains to say things like great, good, awesome, or anything that sounds robotically “normal”. Nothing that would cause suspicion. But how are you really doing?

I want you to take a second and really think how you are actually doing? How are you feeling?

Right now, I’m feeling a little anxious and stressed not just because there are a few things I need to catch up on, but also because life can be stressful. Living moment to moment and for some at a fasted paced lifestyle can be draining.

What if I were to tell you about a tool you can use anywhere, any time and it’s free? Would you use it?

It’s called meditation. This practice sets the body to spend time with our mind while incorporating other aspects such as guides, breathwork, walking and imagery.

Some of the more popular types of meditation are mindfulness, walking, and loving kindness. Mindfulness involves focusing your attention to the present moment. It can incorporate breathwork mechanisms, imagery or guided instructions to help reduce stress. Walking meditation is exactly what it is – walking. During this wander you are focusing on your breath and how the body feels with each step. This can be done anywhere. Loving Kindness, which is one of my favorite “Go-To’s”, is the act of sending positive energy to yourself and other people through mantras or affirmations. May I be well. May I be happy. May I be at peace.

Meditation can be as easy as laying on your bed, floor or desk and taking a slow 4 second breath in and a 8 second exhale out. If you are still not sure how to meditate, check out Headspace, a mindful app that provides users with easy access tools to help manage stress. They offer a 30 day free trial period with an option of $69.99 for the whole year or only $9.99 annually for students.

Don’t want a commitment? That’s okay. Head on over to YouTube and type in the search bar, easy meditation. You will be provided with hundreds of videos featuring guided meditation or peaceful music. If you want to be specific, type in how long you want to be meditating. I started off with 5 minutes and the progressed to 30.

In a study by Harvard University, medical researchers found meditation can lower depression, combat anxiety, and reduce stress. There are many other benefits like improved sleep, lowered blood pressure and resting heart rate, increased self-awareness, and reducing negative thinking.

Whichever one you choose, make sure it works best for you. That can mean trying it all or trying one. Remember, meditation is one size fits all.

The Frog and The Peach

Last January I had the pleasant experience of attending The Frog and The Peach restaurant in New Brunswick, NJ. Chef Bruce Lefebvre’s creative modern American cuisine served in a beautiful greenhouse made a delightful evening for my partner and I.

The Frog and The Peach greenhouse

The Frog and The Peach was founded in 1983 by husband and wife Jim Black and Betsy Alger before executive chef Bruce Lefebvre purchased the restaurant in 2012. Lefebvre prides himself on utilizing New Jersey’s local agriculture and fisheries in his cuisine, and the restaurant cycles through locally-sourced ingredients by season.

Outside The Frog and The Peach

That night, to start we had herbed ricotta gnocchi, served with roasted kohlrabi, goat cheese, and honey, as well as cured tuna sashimi and veal tartare with truffles and quail egg. The fish and veal were flavorful and notably fresh and presented beautifully.

Le Quebecois Veal Tartare

For our entrees, my partner ordered the Long Island duck breast, which was served with an expresso parsnip puree, delicata squash, and black garlic caramel. The puree over the most tender duck breast was delicious. I had the King Ora steamed salmon, served with king oyster mushrooms and sunchoke. The Frog and The Peach’s salmon was the best fish I have had to date; extremely fatty, soft, and flavorful, the freshness and care from catch to pan is noticeable in every bite.

My partner and I’s entrees

If you are a fan of gourmet cuisine or fresh, local food, The Frog and The Peach in New Brunswick is a place you must attend. I plan to eat here again in the summer season, and highly anticipate what Chef Bruce Lefebrve has to offer.

A Review of the Coca-Cola Limited Edition Flavors, So Far

You win, capitalism.

Starlight

Coca-Cola Starlight Ad

The time that I personally experienced this flavor was during last fall (originally released February 2022), and I have to say the sensation matched the Christian girl autumn experience that most people drown in during the season. A lot of tasters have their own interpretation of what the flavor actually tasted like, some good some bad; however I don’t know about anyone else, but I tasted some sweet cinnamon, and I loved it. Apparently to Coca-Cola, this is what space tastes like, and I can kind of see the vision. This is what I’d imagine a candied twinkling star to taste like, very appealing. Please bring her back she needs the spotlight one more time.

Dreamworld

If this is what dreams taste like, I never want to dream again. I have no idea what kind of vision they had for the actual flavor of it, but all I tasted was a really tart grapefruit. Why would my dreams taste so tart? Why would you do this to me Coca-Cola I thought we had something? I reminds me of the one time I bought this Italian grapefruit soda that I thought I would like but it ended up being the worst thing I have ever tasted, not sweet at all, nothing could save it; trust me I tried because I spent money on it. Never again. Just leave her behind, nobody will miss her and her tartness anyway.

This theme is different from the other two, not truly being an atmosphere/aesthetic, but more like a feeling or state-of-being. This can be shown with their partnered artist, Rosalía, in the other ads, she “transforms” similar to the illustrated creations in this ad. “Taste the Transformation” is the slogan they use with this one, and just like the other ones, its really up to your own interpretation to what that means, which I like because there is no right or wrong answers and it gets you to think. When I tried it, it tasted exactly like how Bath & Body Works’ Warm Vanilla Sugar scent smells like. Don’t get me wrong I love vanilla, I personally use that Bath & Body Works set myself, but the taste is obviously nothing natural. Its pretty good, but not amazing. At least its not Dreamworld, but I wish it matched Starlight. I love Rosalía though, putting a face to the flavor is always good for marketing. I’m not sure if artificial vanilla is what transformation tastes like, but I wouldn’t doubt if Rosalía and her music tasted like that, and that’s an interesting theory I can get behind.

The Farm on Glenwood Mountain

Posted by: Emma Astwood

The Farm on Glenwood Mountain is a great little place for anyone who loves the countryside! The farm has a variety of services ranging from a farm shop fir their products, to wedding catering. So even if you aren’t the biggest fan of the farm life, i’m sure you can find something you like here!

The Farm on Glenwood Mountain is, A family farm located on 170 acres in the mountains of northern New Jersey. They raise 100% grass-fed beef, pasture- and woodland-raised pork, free-range chickens, and pasture raised turkeys. Don’t take it from me, take it from the family themselves:

“Our pigs and poultry are given supplemental feed that we make fresh on our farm weekly using 100% non-GMO, locally grown grains and organic minerals/supplements. Our animals are never given antibiotics or hormones, and they live their lives outdoors on pasture, the way nature intended them to. We also grow USDA certified organic vegetables and herbs. We host weddings, farm-to-table dinners and private events.”

Personal Review:

My family and I are regulars at the farm whether it be for business, regular shopping, or food! I have a personal love for their honey! All the family staff there are kind and very welcoming, and i’m a big fan of their restaurant decor! The land itself is also very eye catching, and I quite enjoy taking in the scene of animals grazing. However, I will admit, that part is not for the faint of heart. Overall, I recommend all their products (especially the Canadian bacon), and would say this is a good spot for anyone looking for high quality food products. And as a final good word, i’d say this place reminds me to take in small moments in life! I hope it does the same for you!

The Farm is located along County Rd 565. Its full address is: 1801 County Rd 565, Sussex NJ.

Favorite place

My favor fun spots is any soccer field because growing up, I love playing soccer, and when I am bored, I can play with friends on the field. For me, soccer is therapy for me because I can go out there on a nice day, and just have fun with my friends. my favori Play soccer is at my former high school, by the pit which is a few minutes by my high school, and at SCCC. This field is what it looks like most at time when i play at regardless of the place I am playing at, which is the typical setting

My Top Three Trails of Sussex County

Sussex County is often known for its beautiful nature; the trails show it! These are my top 3 trails to visit in Sussex County.

#3: Swartswood State Park!

Swartswood State Park is a common area for people to visit and enjoy nature. It has excellent trails by the lake and ponds and it is gorgeous overall! You can find it here:

#2: Paulinskill Valley Trail

The Paulinskill Valley Trail is a rail trail, and not only does it have wonderful nature, but it has old technology and bridges you can see from when there was still a train that went through the area. You can start the trail from many different areas, and it goes from Old Station RD to Ceder Lake RD. The trail is about 27 miles in total and connects to other trails on both ends.

#1: Rattlesnake Mountain

A difficult climb that is worth the trip! Rattlesnake Moutain is right by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and there are a few ways to get to it as well! The sight once you get to the top is stunning and my favorite scenic view in New Jersey!

Overall, these trails are perfect for nature seeing, hiking, and strolling. The next time you go on a hike, you may want to think about visiting one of these!
