Sculpey is a brand of polymer clay. With this clay you can make models, beads or anything your mind can imagine.
Sculpey comes in many different types. To start it is broken up into different harnesses.
•Original Sculpey is white in color and has a medium harness. It can be easily modeled and is good for the base of models or projects with little detail and a smooth finish. I used original Sculpey to make this model of my car, Mrs. Jeep. The smooth finish was achieved with original Sculpey and some sanding after the clay was baked.
•For more detailed projects Super Sculpey is a good choice. It is a firmer clay and holds its shape better. It is harder to mold which makes it good for small details and not the whole project. Another cool thing about Sculpey is that it can be baked multiple times without cracking and becoming brittle. You can complete the base of a model and then go back in with more clay after baking to add more final details ro revisions. I used Sculpey originally for the base of these 2 models then completed the details of the wood and water with super Sculpey.
Sculpey has a reasonable bake time and gets very strong once it has been baked. I dropped the model of the water girl in between bakes one time and was able to fix her with minimal damage. Sculpey also comes in an average of colors.
•Sculpey can be painted but when making marbled products like beads it is good to have the individual colors that can be mixed and swirled.
When working with Sculpey I make a base with wire and foil that works well with this clay. The clay easily adheres to it and is a good choice for all of your clay project needs. It won’t harden till baked and can be purchased in bulk.
Sculpey is good for children and adults and is something that we can all use to express our creativity and grow our imagination.
