GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME
Jaws became a nationwide phenomenon, it changed how movies were marketed and released. Universal Studios spent a record breaking 1.8 million on advertising. The market realized that after the success of Jaws , if advertised correctly, movies can generate millions of dollars even in place of quality. It was the first motion picture to be shot in the ocean. It won 3 Oscars for sound, editing, and original score. With Just 2 notes, composer, John Williams changed music in films. The score ranks 6th on the AFI’s 100 years of films scores list. The iconic score is now synonymous with shark attacks. You only needed to hear to hear those two notes, to know something monstrous was lurking. The movie was a turning point in the way people perceive sharks. Overnight, the white shark went from being an obscure creature to a man eating monster, better known as “The Jaws Effect”. Since its release, the world has witnessed a decline of 71% in shark populations and around 100 million sharks are killed each year. The films portrayal of shark attacks, left an uneasy feeling among beachgoers, which eventually led to a decline in seaside tourism. While this was only temporary, it showed how strong a fictional narrative can influence the real world. Till this day, the film still has a place in pop culture. From T-shirt to toys , to the famous line “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” and ” Smile you son of a bitch” the film has grown bigger then itself .
