The world famous author, Jane Austen has been an influence upon many generations of women on the happenings of love. Her work is not only so relatable due to her real life inspirations but due to the reactions of many of the characters. Many say that is why her novels are so well beloved, and still so prevalent in today’s age. But can we take any inspiration from these stories and transfer them into our real lives? Many can argue no, these are fictional characters with fictional scenarios, all controlled by the beautiful and talented Jane Austen. Every story has a happy ending and life doesn’t exactly go like that. But there is much to take away from Jane Austin‘s work, especially one of her most famous “Sense and Sensibility”.

In most of Jane Austen ‘s work, things are not always as they appear at first to the main character(s), and this is no different in sense and sensibility. Marianne Dashwood is young, sweet and innocent, but also naïve. After falling for the charms of what we are led to believe is a gentleman, she is devastated to learn the fact that he (after entertaining the thought of marriage with Marianne) is discovered to be engaged with a wealthy aristocratic woman. He made a fool out of Miss Dashwood and broke her heart. But where there is darkness there is light in the form of Colonel Brandon, a kind older gentleman who cares deeply and genuinely about Miss Dashwood.

Jane Austin points out their striking differences, not only in appearance, but in attitude. Although the young “gentleman” John Willoughby was handsome, kind, and romantic. Looking back, you can see his fickle nature, clear as day. But with Colonel Brandon we see his kind, warm, yet firm character on every page he appears on. Although he is not as handsome or as young, he is genuine and shows strength in character

Like in many stories, we can take away certain lessons. But in Jane Austin’s tales, she could make all her characters and all their situations real and therefore relatable. We have all fallen victim to a pretty face. But there is always hope, there is always the ability to look deeper, find something worthwhile, or find the truth. In the end, Marianne Dashwood learned her lesson. Although it came with heartbreak and near death, she learned it and prevailed in the end with finding a kind husband in Mr. Colonel Brandon

Although not all of us may not be looking for husbands or wives, we would all like to find a genuine and kind person who we can have in our lives. Take a page out of Jane Austen’s books and you can find yourself a Mr. Colonel Brandon or a Mr. Darcy. (But pride and prejudice is for another day!) <3
